14-Days Private Tanzania Safari & Zanzibar Itinerary

Enjoy private logistics on the Northern Safari Circuit, followed by personalized relaxation on Zanzibar's best beaches.

Planning two weeks in Tanzania should feel exciting, not overwhelming.
This 14-day private safari and Zanzibar itinerary is designed to balance wildlife, travel time, and proper rest, so you don’t spend your holiday rushing between parks.

At Ekuseni Travel, we plan this trip together with you. Some travelers want more safari, others want more beach, some want slower mornings. This plan shows the smartest starting structure, then we adjust it to your pace and budget.

Why 14 days is ideal for Tanzania + Zanzibar

  • Enough time for Serengeti without rushing

  • Includes Ngorongoro properly (not as a drive-through stop)

  • Avoids exhausting long road loops

  • Keeps Zanzibar at the end for recovery

  • Allows flexible lodge levels

Many rushed itineraries try to fit too many parks in too few days.
We plan routes that minimise backtracking and unnecessary packing.

Why Safari First and Zanzibar Last
(It Matters More Than You Think)

Most people planning this trip assume the order does not matter.
It does.
Safari is physically demanding in ways that are easy to underestimate before you experience it. You wake before sunrise every day, sometimes as early as 5am. You spend hours in a 4×4 vehicle on rough bush
tracks. The dust, the heat, the constant alertness of scanning the landscape.
It is one of the best experiences of your life, but it is not a rest.

By the end of your last day in the Serengeti, most travelers are genuinely tired. Good tired. The kind of tired that comes from being fully present for something extraordinary. But tired.

Zanzibar is the perfect answer to that.

Stepping off the plane onto the island and feeling the ocean breeze after days in the bush is a contrast that travelers consistently tell us was one of the best moments of the entire trip. The white sand, the slow pace, the sound of the Indian Ocean, all of it lands differently when your body actually needs it.

Safari first, beach last is not just a logistical choice. It is the order that makes both halves of the trip feel exactly as they should.

Your 14-Day Tanzania and Zanzibar Trip, Day by Day

Day 1: Arrival in Kilimanjaro & Arusha Comfort

Your private driver meets you at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transfers you to your lodge in Arusha. Most travelers arrive after 10 to 20 hours of travel.
Starting safari immediately on no sleep is one of the most common mistakes we see. This first night is intentional. Rest properly, eat something good, and let Tanzania settle around you.
The bush starts tomorrow and it deserves your full attention.

After breakfast your guide drives you southwest to Tarangire. Two hours through Maasai villages and open farmland before the park gates. Tarangire is where most people have their first real wildlife moment of the trip. Elephant herds of 50 or more gather along the Tarangire River, and the ancient baobab trees give the park a look unlike anywhere else on the circuit.

We start here because it is the closest major park to Arusha, so your first safari day begins without a punishing long drive. Picnic lunch inside the park, then on to your lodge near Karatu for the night.

You descend into the crater before 8am. At 260 square kilometers it is a self contained ecosystem where wildlife has no reason to leave. Lion, elephant, buffalo, zebra, hippo, and one of Tanzania’s last stable black rhino populations all share this floor. Most travelers see more species in four hours here than in two days elsewhere.

After lunch at the Hippo Pool we drive west into the Serengeti. The trees thin out and suddenly there are plains stretching further than you can properly process. That first view tends to go quiet in the vehicle. Every time.

No fixed schedule. That is the point. Each morning your guide reads the environment, checks the radio network for recent sightings, and builds the day around what is actually happening. You follow the wildlife, not a route. Mornings are for predators. Midday you stop somewhere with a view and eat properly.

One last sunrise drive before breakfast. Most travelers are not quite ready to leave, and this gives the Serengeti a proper goodbye. The drive back to Arusha passes through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area again, and the landscape feels different on the return now that you know it. By the time you reach your hotel in Arusha, you will be tired in the best possible way. Good meal, proper shower, early night.

This day is here because guests who fly straight from the Serengeti to Zanzibar consistently tell us they were too exhausted to enjoy their first beach day. Spend the morning at Arusha’s central market, one of the most genuine local markets in East Africa. Have Tanzanian coffee at a local spot. Walk at your own pace with no agenda.

By evening the safari energy has settled. You are rested and ready for the ocean. Tomorrow, Zanzibar.

One hour flight from Arusha. On a clear day you can see the island from the air before you land, white sand and turquoise water that looks almost unreal from above. Your driver takes you north to Nungwi, about 90 minutes through the island’s interior past spice farms and village life at a pace that feels completely different from the mainland. Nungwi faces west so you get the sunset directly from the water on your first evening. With the Indian Ocean in front of you and the Serengeti two days behind you, most travelers go very quiet. That contrast has to be earned. By now you have earned it.

Morning on the water with an ethical dolphin tour in the calm Indian Ocean. Afternoon at Kendwa Beach, one of the most beautiful stretches on the island. The day ends on a traditional dhow watching the sun drop into the ocean from the water. A full and genuinely wonderful day.

Immerse yourself in Zanzibar’s rich history with a Spice Tour. Learn firsthand about the cultivation and traditional use of cloves, nutmeg, and cinnamon on an organic farm. In the afternoon, your private driver will efficiently transfer you to your boutique hotel in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Stone Town, ensuring a seamless change of scenery.

We start with a short boat trip to Prison Island (Changuu Island) to meet the giant, century-old Aldabra tortoises and explore the island’s history. The afternoon is dedicated to a thorough, personalized walking tour of Stone Town. Your local guide will lead you through the narrow streets, explaining the intricate architecture and the blending of Arab, European, and African cultures.

Planning Tip: Boat ride to Prison Island is better during morning hours when the ocean is ‘cool’.

Today is your intentionally scheduled “Freedom Day”, designed to ensure your peak enjoyment of the trip’s final days. We dedicate this full 24 hours to relaxation and recovery for two essential reasons:

  1. Recharge and Rebalance: The trip so far, from early morning safari drives in the Serengeti to the immersive cultural walking tours in Stone Town, has been stimulating and active. This day allows your body and mind to completely recharge and rebalance, preventing burnout.

  2. Preparation for Safari Blue: The next day features the renowned Safari Blue Tour, a magnificent but demanding all-day excursion lasting approximately 8 to 9 hours. This dedicated rest ensures you are fully energized to enjoy every moment of sailing, snorkeling, and beach time, turning an otherwise exhausting day into a seamless highlight.

Feel free to use this time for spontaneous local discovery, buying souvenirs, a quiet morning, or simply lounging by the ocean, the schedule is entirely yours.

Go on the highly rated Safari Blue Tour. Spend the day sailing on a traditional dhow boat, exploring sandbank, snorkeling in coral lagoons, and indulging in a fresh seafood barbecue lunch on a remote beach. This full-day adventure is the perfect, joyous farewell to the Indian Ocean.

Your driver collects you from the hotel and transfers you to Zanzibar International Airport for your outbound flight. Fourteen days, two completely different worlds, one trip that holds together exactly as it should.

Common Questions, Expert Answers

Is the 14-day itinerary flexible if we want more safari time or more beach time?

Absolutely. The itinerary is fully customizable, reflecting our promise of high flexibility. We adjust the ratio of safari days versus beach days to perfectly match your preferences.

The best time to visit is during the dry seasons, from June to October and from December to February. These months offer the clearest skies and perfect conditions for marine activities like the Safari Blue Tour.

The standard is consistently high. We use quality, authentic luxury and mid-range tented camps on safari and character-filled boutique hotels on the beach for a personalized experience.

Safari before Zanzibar is strongly recommended, and here is why. The safari portion early morning game drives, rough bush roads, long hours in a vehicle is exhilarating but physically tiring.

Arriving in Zanzibar after the safari means the beach genuinely feels like the reward it is meant to be. Your body is ready to
slow down, and the contrast between the raw energy of the Serengeti and the calm of the Indian Ocean makes both experiences more memorable.

Doing it the other way around means you arrive on safari already relaxed from the beach, then have to mentally and physically shift into the demands of the bush, which works against you.

Yes, we partner only with local operators who follow strict marine guidelines, prioritizing the welfare of the animals. Your experience supports responsible and ethical tourism practices.

Only a moderate level of fitness is required, as most safari time is seated, and Zanzibar activities are gentle. The itinerary includes a dedicated Freedom Day to ensure you are well-rested.
