Why We Love this Safari Itinerary
We love this itinerary because it delivers pure, unadulterated drama. The calving season in Ndutu is the Great Migration at its most vulnerable and beautiful. You are watching a life-and-death struggle unfold in real-time, and it’s a profound experience unlike any other.
The itinerary perfectly balances this intense wilderness experience with visits to two other Tanzanian giants: Tarangire, known for its gentle giants (elephants) and beautiful scenery, and the Ngorongoro Crater, which guarantees spectacular wildlife viewing due to its unique ecosystem.
Your 7-Day Calving Migration Safari, Day by Day
Day 1: Arrival and Welcome to Arusha
Upon landing at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), an Ekuseni host will be there to greet you with a warm, friend-like welcome. We’ll handle your transfer to your chosen accommodation in Arusha. The rest of the day is yours for relaxation and final preparation.
Day 2: Tarangire National Park & Karatu Town
Our Safari begins with a drive to Tarangire National Park. This visit is strategically planned to break up the long journey south, positioning us perfectly for the Ngorongoro Crater tomorrow while offering superb game viewing.
In the late afternoon, we’ll transition out of the park and drive to the picturesque Karatu town area, nestled near the Ngorongoro highlands, for your overnight stay.
Day 3: Ngorongoro Crater Descent and Transfer to Ndutu
We start bright and early for a drive up to the Ngorongoro Crater rim. Then, we descend into the caldera for an unforgettable five-hour Safari drive. The Crater floor offers one of the most reliable and intense wildlife viewing experiences anywhere in Africa. After ascending the rim, we proceed on a scenic journey directly to the Ndutu area.
Day 4 & 5: Full Days Tracking the Migration in Ndutu
You now have two full, dedicated days for Safari drives in the vast, open plains of the Ndutu region. Your expert guide will use their deep knowledge to track the movements of the enormous herds of wildebeest and zebras, focusing on the thousands of newborns.
This high density of prey attracts an equally high concentration of predators, and we will dedicate time to tracking lions, leopards, cheetahs, and hyenas.
We build high flexibility into these days: we can tailor the drives based on current herd movements or your specific interest.
Day 6: Final Ndutu Game Drive and Return to Arusha
We enjoy a final morning game drive in the Ndutu area, capturing any last unforgettable moments with the Great Migration.
We then begin the long, but highly scenic, drive back to the Arusha area. This journey offers a final appreciation for the vast scale of the Tanzanian plains and wildlife corridors.
Note on Travel Logistics: The drive on Day 6 is a long, demanding journey. We offer a domestic flight from the Ndutu Airstrip back to Arusha as an optional upgrade. This flight significantly reduces travel time and maximizes your comfort and rest before departure, which we highly recommend!
Day 7: Departure Day
After a relaxed breakfast at your hotel, your Ekuseni host will ensure a timely and comfortable transfer from your hotel back to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) for your departing flight.
Common Questions, Expert Answers
When is the best time of year for this Calving Migration Safari?
The calving season generally takes place between December and March each year. This itinerary is perfectly suited for travel during these months when the herds are concentrated in the southern Ndutu plains for the birthing season.
What is the "Ekuseni Difference" mentioned in the itinerary?
The Ekuseni Difference is our commitment to providing a “friend-like” travel experience. This means high flexibility in game drives, personalized briefings, customized options (like the flight upgrade), and ensuring your journey meets your individual needs and budget (we cater from mid-range comfort to high-end luxury).
Is the return trip by road on Day 6 too tiring?
We are transparent about the travel time, it is a long but beautiful drive (approximately 6to 7 hours).
This is why we offer the optional domestic flight from Ndutu Airstrip to Arusha. We recommend this upgrade if maximizing comfort and rest is a priority for you before flying home.
What is the recommended accommodation standard for this itinerary?
Accommodation is tailored to your budget. We can arrange stays from comfortable, well-placed mid-range lodges and mobile camps to exquisite high-end camps, ensuring you have the perfect base for your adventure.
Will I see the "Big Five" on this Safari?
Wildlife viewing is never guaranteed—we are exploring natural, wild ecosystems, not a zoo, so specific sightings depend on Mother Nature! However, the Ngorongoro Crater provides an excellent opportunity to see the Big Five (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant, buffalo) due to the high concentration of animals in the caldera.
While we can’t promise specific sightings, rest assured that our skilled and experienced Ekuseni guides will use their deep knowledge to track and find them, doing their absolute best to make it happen.
What specific type of wildlife can I expect to see in Ndutu?
The primary focus is the hundreds of thousands of wildebeest and zebra, alongside their newborn calves. You can also expect to see the predators drawn to them, including lions, cheetahs, leopards, and hyenas.
How close do we get to the calving herds?
We adhere strictly to Tanzania National Park regulations, maintaining a respectful distance. However, the sheer density of the herds means you will be completely surrounded by the spectacle, offering incredible photographic opportunities.
Is this Safari suitable for young children?
This is a fantastic Safari for families! Ndutu provides wonderful action. However, the long driving times (especially Days 2, 3, and 6) should be considered. We recommend confirming with us based on your children’s age and tolerance for long drives.
What kind of vehicles are used for the game drives?
We use comfortable, customized 4×4 Safari vehicles (typically Toyota Land Cruisers) equipped with pop-up roofs for optimal game viewing and photography, power outlets for charging, and a small refrigerator for cold drinks.
Do I need any vaccinations or health precautions for this trip?
We always recommend consulting your personal physician or a travel health clinic well in advance. Tanzania has specific requirements, and general precautions often include Yellow Fever certification (if arriving from certain countries).
