The Ekuseni Difference: Flexibility & Friendship

How is Ekuseni different from a standard tour company?

We’re a travel logistics company that offers the full experience of a tour operator, but with a unique twist: we want you to feel like you’re visiting a friend, not a business. This means we offer a high level of flexibility on itineraries, changes, meal preferences, and pace that other companies simply cannot match. Your dedicated travel specialist is a friend on the ground, making sure your trip is perfectly tailored and stress-free.

High flexibility is our promise. While we plan a fantastic framework, we understand that travel inspiration can strike at any time. Depending on the logistics of the change (e.g., a spontaneous desire to spend an extra night somewhere), we will move mountains to accommodate you. Just let your dedicated on-site logistics manager know, and we’ll handle the details.

Your safety and comfort are our absolute priority. We only work with vetted, high-quality lodges, certified guides, and modern, well-maintained vehicles. As your local friend, we provide a 24/7 direct contact line for immediate support. We monitor local conditions closely and handle all on-the-ground logistics so you can focus entirely on enjoying your trip.

We specialize in private and custom-designed travel for individuals, couples, families, and small groups of friends. We do not run large, fixed-departure group tours unless specifically requested. This ensures that the pace, itinerary, and vehicle are exclusively tailored to you and your companions.

Planning & Booking Your Adventure

What is the payment structure and cancellation policy?

We require a small initial deposit (30%) to secure your dates and accommodations. The remaining balance is typically due closer to your departure date.

We know plans change, so we offer a more flexible cancellation and rescheduling policy than most operators. All the details will be clearly laid out in your initial personalized quote.

Absolutely. We pride ourselves on attention to detail. Please let us know your requirements, whether it’s gluten-free, vegan, or a severe allergy, when you book.

We communicate directly with all our partner lodges and chefs to ensure safe, delicious, and customized meals throughout your entire trip.

While we are experts in all in-country travel, logistics, and arrangements, we generally suggest you book your own international flights. We do, however, strongly recommend and can advise on reputable providers for comprehensive travel insurance.

Yes! As your friend, we know the stress of traveling with kids. We specialize in designing family-friendly itineraries, including private vehicle options, lodges with child-friendly amenities, and activities paced specifically for younger travelers. Let us know the ages of your children, and we will suggest the perfect setup.

Destination Spotlight: Tanzania

What is the best time of year to witness the Great Migration in Tanzania?

The Great Migration is a year-round movement, but your experience will vary by season. We’ll chat about the best timing: January–March for calving in the Southern Serengeti or June–October for river crossings further north.

For efficiency and stunning views, we primarily use reliable domestic charter flights between the Serengeti, Ngorongoro, and other parks. Ground transfers are handled by our trusted, comfortable 4×4 safari vehicles.

Our top-of-the-line safari vehicles are custom-built, extended 4x4s with a pop-up roof. This offers the best of both worlds: protection during transit and an excellent 360-degree viewing experience while on game drives.

While major lodges and camps accept credit cards, we highly recommend carrying some US dollars (small denominations) for tips, minor purchases, and small curio shops, especially in more remote areas.

Requirements can change, but generally, a Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is only required if you are arriving from a country with a risk of Yellow Fever transmission, or if you are transiting through one for more than 12 hours.

Can Ekuseni arrange a hot air balloon safari over the Serengeti?

Absolutely. This is a magical experience we highly recommend and can seamlessly integrate into your itinerary. We book with established, licensed operators well in advance.

Tipping is a customary way to show appreciation. We provide a clear, friendly guideline upon booking, but as your friend, we assure you it is voluntary, the amount is always discretionary, and based on the quality of service you receive.

We are deeply committed to conservation and community. We partner with eco-conscious lodges and local businesses and ensure all our activities respect wildlife and contribute positively to local communities.

This period is typically the dry season, offering sunny, cool mornings and evenings, and warm afternoons. It’s the ideal time for game viewing as the vegetation is sparse.

Most foreign nationals require a visa. We advise you to check with your local Tanzanian embassy or apply for an e-Visa online before you travel.

Destination Spotlight: Zanzibar

Is Zanzibar a safe destination for solo female travelers?

Yes, Zanzibar is generally very safe and welcoming. As your logistics friend, we ensure your transfers are private and reliable, and we only recommend resorts and activities with excellent safety records.

The North (Nungwi, Kendwa) is known for stunning beaches and is tide-independent. The East Coast is great for quiet relaxation and kite surfing. We’ll help you pick the perfect spot based on your vibe.

Absolutely, this is one of our most popular requests! We specialize in seamless logistics to move you directly from the excitement of the mainland safari to the relaxation of a Zanzibar beach resort.

While beach areas are casual, it’s respectful to dress modestly when visiting Stone Town or local villages. Covering shoulders and knees is recommended for both men and women.

For flexibility and comfort, we arrange private, air-conditioned transfers with trusted local drivers for all your day excursions, tours (like the Spice Tour), and airport transfers.

Are the beaches affected by the tides?

Yes, the tidal movement on the East Coast is quite noticeable and can greatly affect swimming. If tide-free swimming is a priority, we’ll recommend resorts on the North or Northwest coast.

Definitely. We partner with certified and highly-rated PADI dive centers on the island to arrange diving and snorkeling trips to places like Mnemba Atoll.

We strongly advise against drinking tap water. Stick to bottled water, which is provided by all reputable hotels and available everywhere.

The Tanzanian Shilling (TZS) is the official currency, but US Dollars are widely accepted at hotels and for tours. We can advise you on the best places to exchange currency.

While the risk is generally considered low, Zanzibar is a malaria risk area. We highly recommend consulting with your doctor about prophylaxis before traveling.

Destination Spotlight: Kenya

When is the best time to see the Mara River crossing during the Great Migration in Kenya?

The dramatic river crossings in the Maasai Mara typically occur between July and October. We’ll make sure your accommodation is strategically placed for the best possible viewing access.

Road quality varies, but our 4×4 safari vehicles are rugged and extremely comfortable to handle all terrain. Travel is often part of the adventure! We prioritize safe and efficient driving.

Absolutely, this is one of our most popular requests! We specialize in seamless logistics to move you directly from the excitement of the mainland safari to the relaxation of a Zanzibar beach resort.

Yes, due to the nature of bush flying, there is typically a 15 kg (33 lbs) limit per person for luggage, often requiring a soft-sided bag. We’ll send clear packing instructions to prepare you.

We highly recommend this! A private vehicle and dedicated guide offer the ultimate flexibility: you set the pace, leave when you want, and focus on the wildlife you love most.

What are Kenya's entry and visa requirements?

Most foreign travelers need an e-Visa which should be applied for in advance. Kenya has transitioned to a digital system, and we can guide you through the process.

The Maasai Mara is famous for the Migration, but we also love the unique wildlife of Samburu and the majestic backdrop of Amboseli. We’ll tailor a multi-park itinerary just for you

Absolutely. Kenya has some of the world’s most unique lodges. As your travel friends, we love booking clients into special spots like treehouse lodges and properties known for their conservation efforts.

Kenya uses the Type G three-pin square plug (the same as in the UK). Voltage is 240V. We recommend bringing a universal adapter.

For peak season (July-October), we advise booking 9 to 12 months in advance to secure the best-located camps, especially for the Great Migration.

Destination Spotlight: South Africa

Why does Ekuseni prioritize private transfers and dedicated drivers in South Africa?

As your travel friends on the ground, we want you to focus purely on enjoying your vacation. We use private, dedicated transfers to ensure the highest level of comfort, safety, and flexibility across all road journeys, from airport pickups to city tours and hotel transfers, removing the stress of self-driving or finding reliable transport.

We handle the full transport chain. This typically involves pre-arranged domestic flights to quickly cover long distances (e.g., Cape Town to Kruger area) and private, pre-scheduled transfers by road for all local excursions and hotel-to-hotel movements.

Kruger is the vast, public park where game viewing rules are more restricted. Private Reserves (like Sabi Sands) offer a more exclusive safari experience with luxurious accommodations, and allow for expert guides to drive off-road for closer, more focused animal sightings. We book both, based on your preference.

For flexibility and comfort, we arrange for private drivers and dedicated vehicles for all your day tours, airport transfers, and excursions in Cape Town and the Winelands, allowing you to relax and enjoy the local wines responsibly.

Most visitors from the US, UK, and EU do not need a visa for stays up to 90 days, but regulations change. We always advise you to check the latest rules with your local consulate or embassy.

Are your safari guides in South Africa armed?

Guides in private reserves are highly trained and often carry firearms for guest protection against dangerous game during walking safaris, which is a standard safety measure we insist upon for your well-being.

South Africa has specific, though recently simplified, rules regarding minors. We will provide you with the latest official advice to ensure you have all the necessary paperwork, especially certified birth certificates, if traveling with children.

The best time is generally from June to November, with peak season often being September and October, when Southern Right Whales congregate in places like Hermanus.

Absolutely! South Africa is perfect for varied adventures. We expertly handle the flight logistics and accommodation bookings to move you smoothly from a bush safari to the cosmopolitan feel of Cape Town and the wine region.

Yes, you need the yellow fever vaccine if you are traveling from a country with a risk of yellow fever transmission, and you will need a valid certificate to prove it.

Several other vaccines are recommended or may be required for South Africa, depending on your specific travel plans and areas you will visit, including hepatitis A, hepatitis B, polio, typhoid, rabies, and tetanus.

Consult your doctor or a travel health clinic at least 4 to 6 weeks before your departure to discuss which vaccines are best for you and to ensure they are administered and become effective in time.
